As part of its standard to forge and maintain long-term, positive and proactive
relationships with members of the community and be transparent about its operations
and programs, OCWD board members and staff participate, regularly, at community
events and speak before civic groups. Below are a few we participated in during
March.
- President Cathy Green provided a presentation to the Huntington Beach Coordinating
Council about Orange County's groundwater supplies and challenges.
- OCWD General Manager Mike Markus gave a presentation to the Yorba Linda Water
District Board of Directors regarding the groundwater contamination projects in
both the North Basin and South Basin.
- Chief Hydrogeologist Roy Herndon gave a presentation titled "The Orange County
Groundwater Basin - The Water Supply Under Our Feet" to a group of about 80
people as the first of a four-part class on water. The class is one of the courses
offered by the University of California Irvine's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
- Recharge Planning Manager Adam Hutchinson participated in a panel on Integrated
Water Resources Management at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Region
9 CA Infrastructure Symposium in San Diego. Adam presented how OCWD is working to
meet increasing water demands in spite of reduced base flows, uncertainties in imported
water supplies and drought.
- President Cathy Green provided a presentation to the Industrial Environmental
Coalition of Orange County about the groundwater basin and OCWD's response to
the drought.
- Recharge Planning Manager Adam Hutchinson provided an update on groundwater basin
conditions and the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act to the monthly meeting
of the Orange County Water Association (OCWA) in Irvine.
- Principal Hydrogeologist David Bolin attended a public meeting in Santa Ana held
by the State Department of Toxic Substances Control at which he presented a summary
of the District's comments on a groundwater remediation plan proposed by a potentially
responsible party in the City of Santa Ana within the South Basin.
- Chief Hydrogeologist Roy Herndon gave a presentation on the District's formation
history, statutory authority, and basin management policies to a water law class
at Chapman University. He also covered the basic provisions of the 2014 Sustainable
Groundwater Management Act.
- The highlight of the recent annual California WateReuse Conference was a presentation
given by OCWD Water Production Intern, Raul Gonzalez, titled "Application of
Control Chart Theory for Online Critical Control Point Monitoring." The presentation
covered work Raul did for OCWD. This was Raul's first professional presentation,
which was well received and prompted a number of questions.
