As part of its standard to forge and maintain long-term, positive and proactive relationships with members of the community and be transparent about its operations and programs, OCWD board members and staff participate, regularly, at community events and speak before civic groups. We participated in the following during July:
  • Directors Philip Anthony and Cathy Green and OCWD Exec. Dir. of Engineering, Planning and Local Resources John Kennedy attended the city of Garden Grove City Council meeting and gave updates on the District's work regarding the Poseidon Huntington Beach desalination project.
  • District staff met with representatives of the city of Santa Ana and Irvine Ranch Water District to discuss potential "early action" remedial options for the South Basin groundwater contamination. Staff indicated that it is considering the potential need to implement a pilot-scale test facility to evaluate water treatment technologies in support of the District's ongoing remedial investigation/feasibility study.
  • Chief Hydrogeologist Roy Herndon participated in a meeting to advise the State Department of Water Resources on implementation of aspects of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. Specific issues discussed included the draft basin boundary regulations, water availability for groundwater replenishment, and intra-basin coordination agreements, among other topics.
  • Recharge Planning Manager Adam Hutchinson participated in the second of two roundtable discussions hosted by the California Water Foundation to discuss Climate-Resilient Groundwater Management written by the Union of Concerned Scientists on Sustainable Groundwater Measureable Objectives. The goal of the roundtables and white paper is to supply the California Department of Water Resources with a document that will assist it in drafting regulations for groundwater sustainability plans.
  • Principal Engineer Sandy Scott-Roberts and Communications Specialist Crystal Nettles participated in the Water Technology in Action Expo hosted by the California State Government and sponsored by the Association of California Water Agencies and Imagine H20. The event was a summit on water technology & the drought and focused on leveraging technology to build a drought resilient California.

  • Recharge Planning Manager Adam Hutchinson joined fellow panelists Dan Ferons, GM of Santa Margarita Water District; Joe Berg, Water-Use Efficiency Programs Manager for MWDOC; and Matt Collings, Assistant General Manager of Moulton Niguel Water District at the monthly meeting of the Orange County branch of the American Society of Engineers to discuss recycled water, new supplies of water, the drought emergency, and conservation.
  • OCWD staff participated at Global Inheritance's Oasis Water Bar at the U.S. Open of Surfing 2015 in Huntington Beach. About 100 people took the challenge and blind taste-tested various water types, including GWRS water. They learned the story behind each one and its potential for the future.
